I was relieved that I had the desk to myself, that Edward was absent.

에드워드가 결석해 책상을 혼자 차지하게 됐다는 생각에 일단은 안도감이 들었다.

 

I told myself that repeatedly.

나는 속으로 그 생각을 곱씹었다.

 

But I couldn't get rid of the nagging suspicion that I was the reason he wasn't there.

그러나 그가 결석한 이유가 바로 나 때문이라는 뼈아픈 의구심은 좀처럼 떨쳐버릴 수 없었다.

It was ridiculous, and egotistical, to think that I could affect anyone that strongly. 내가 누군가에게 그토록 강하게 영향을 끼칠 수 있다고 생각하는 건 우스꽝스럽고 독선적인 일이다.

It was impossible.

그런 일은 있을 수 없었다.

 

And yet I couldn't stop worrying that it was true.

그런데 그게 사실일 거라는 걱정을 지울 수가 없었다.

I hadn't noticed their clothes before - I'd been too mesmerized by their faces.

그들의 얼굴에 매료되어 이제껏 옷차림새를 눈여겨본 적이 없었는데, 이제 보니 그들은 옷맵시 역시 남달리 빼어났다.

Now that I looked, it was obvious that they were all dressed exceptionally well; simply, but in clothes that subtly hinted at designer origins.

 

단순하게 좋은 옷이긴 해도, 어딘지 모르게 유명 디자이너가 만든 명품 느낌을 묘하게 풍겼다.

With their remarkable good looks, the style with which they carried themselves, they could have won dishrags and pulled it off.

 

하긴 잘생긴 외모에 뛰어난 옷맵시까지 갖추었으니, 걸레 조각을 걸쳐도 멋들어져 보일 것 같았다.

 ▶ pull it off 잘 해내다

 

 

It seemed excessive for them to have both looks and money.

 

외모도 훌륭한데 돈까지 많다니, 진짜 복이 넘쳐나는 게 아닌가 싶었다.

 

 

But as far as I could tell, life worked that way most of time.

 

하지만 내가 지금 껏 살아온 바로는 세상은 대부분 이런 식이다..

 

 

It didn't looks as if it brought them any acceptance here.

 

그나마 그들도 돈으로 이곳 사람들의 호의를 사지는 못한듯하다.
