He dropped his head into his hands, as he had that night in Port Angeles.

 

그는 포트 앤젤레스에서 저녁을 함께 보내면서, 그는 양손에 얼굴을 파묻었다.

 

 

His anguish was plain; I yearned to comfort him, but I was at a loss to know how.

 

그의 고뇌가 눈에 선했다. 나는 그를 위로하고 싶었지만, 어떻게 해야 할지 방법을 몰랐다.

My hand reached toward him involuntarily; quickly, though, I dropped it to the table, tearing that my touch would only make things worse.

 

나도 모르게 테이블 너머로 손을 뻗다가 문득, 혹시 상황을 더 악화시킬지도 모른다는 생각이 들어 얼른 내려놓았다.

I realized slowly that his words should frightened me.

 

내가 그의 말에 공포감을 느껴야만 한다는 것을 서서히 깨달았다.

 

 

I waited for that fear to come, but all I could seem to feel was an ache for his pain.

 

공포가 찾아오기를 기다렸지만, 나는 그의 고통을 안타까워하는 마음뿐이었다.

 

 

And frustration - frustration that Rosalie had interrupted whatever he was about to say.

 

그리고 로잘리가 끼어드는 바람에 에드워드가 하려던 말을 듣지 못해서 혼란스럽기도 했다.

 

 

 

I didm't know how to bring it up again.

 

나는 그 얘기를 다시 꺼낼 수가 없었다.

 

 

He still had his head in his hands.

 

그는 아직도 양손에 얼굴을 묻고 있었다.

나는 소스라치게 놀랐다.

 

 

Alice - her short, inky hair in a halo of spiky disarray around her exquisite, elfin face - was suddenly standing behind his shoulder. 

 

요정같이 절묘한 얼굴에 칠흑같이 새카맣고 짧은 머리를 후광처럼 아무렇게나 흩어 뜨린 앨리스가 에드워드 등 뒤에서 있었다.

 

 

 

He greeted her without looking away from me.

 

에드워드는 나를 보던 시선을 돌리지도 않고 그녀를 맞이했다.

 

 

"Alice."

"Edward." she answered, her high soprno voice almost as attractive as his.

 

"앨리스"

"에드워드" 그녀의 높은 소프라노 목소리는 에드워드 목소리만큼이나 매력적이었다.
