Predictably Irrational 

 

At the  onset of World WarII, an Italian diamon dealer, James Assael, fled Europe for Cuba.

 

제2차 세계대전이 일어나자, 이탈리아 다이아몬드 상인 제임스 아사엘은 유럽에서 쿠바로 피신했다.

 

 

There, he found a new livelihood : the American army needed waterproof watches, and Assael, through his contacts in Switzerland, was also to fill the demand.

 

거기에서 그는 새로운 생계거리를 찾았다. 그것은 바로 미군에서는 방수시계가 필요하다는 사실이다. 그래서 스위스에 있는 지인을 통해 그들의 수요를 채워 주었다.

When the war ended, Assael's deal with the U.S. government dried up, and he was left with thousands of Swiss watches.

The Japanese needed watche, of course.

 

일본도 시계를 필요로 했다.

 

 

But they didn't have any money.

They did have pearls, though - many thousands of them.

 

대신 그들에게는 아주 많은 지주가 있었다.

 

 

Before long, assael had taught his son how to barter Swiss watches for Japanese pearls.

 

얼마 뒤, 아사엘은 자신의 아들에게 스위스 시계와 일본 진주를 교환하는 방식으로 거래하는 법을 가르쳐 주었다.

The business blossomed, and shortly thereafter, the son, Salvador Assael, became known as the "pearl kning."
